History Of North Church
First known as Life Center North, we began meeting at Northwood Middle School in 1999. The original planting team of about 50 men, women, and children weren’t certain how many folks to expect that first Sunday, so they were both shocked and blessed to welcome nearly 600 worshipers and seekers. But the rented space meant moving and setting up every piece of music and technical equipment, an entire coffee bar, a complete children’s ministry, and a big pile of chairs! In 2004, God opened the door for the church to rent the old Lyons Theater. Friendship Church began in that church as a buddy system to reach individuals with special needs and their families. In 2006, Serve Spokane started as a food pantry and quickly added clothing for those in need. And the Spokane Ministry Institute was established to partner with other churches in the area, offer Biblical training, and raise up church leaders. But when the owner sold the property and taped an eviction notice to the door, God said clearly that it was time to stop renting. Raising $2 million for property purchase and renovation at the end of a nationwide recession is no easy task, but God’s people once again said "YES!". Easter 2012 hosted the first service at the current location on North Division, and our mighty God has been using this building ever since. The church changed its name to North Church to establish a more permanent identity in the community.
Friendship Church grew too large for our meager facility and became Project ID at its own location. The Powers family said YES to God when they stepped out to plant The Heights Church in Airway Heights. We’ve been able to bring the Rooted program to North Church and help other Spokane churches start their own Rooted programs. We also continually work in partnership with local nonprofits in the area who are able to reach farther than we could by ourselves to serve the homeless, welcome refugees from around the world, and support several churches and ministries in Asia and Africa! At the moment, we are excited to support Wayne Farris and his team as they plant Journey Church in the Nine Mile area! As part of the PNW Movement, we look forward to more church plants down the road. Pastor Mike transitioned into a mentoring position within North Church and across the greater Spokane region, and we are thrilled to see how God is using Pastors Nate and Chantel Meade as the new lead pastors here!
Through all the building, leadership, and culture changes, we at North Church are continually committed to serve our local and global community, develop disciples of Christ, and inspire others to say YES to God!
