Feeding on God’s word 10.18.19
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 4:4 (NASB)
This is Jesus’ answer when he was hungry and the devil tried to tempt him with bread. Jesus acknowledges the importance of food in order to stay alive but makes it clear that we need so much more.
Food provides nutrition and energy for our physical bodies to grow and maintain strength. Likewise, the word of God nourishes and develops our souls.
Reading the word helps us understand God’s character and his love for us. We also learn what he expects of us and what he wants for us.
And similar to eating food at regular intervals, we need to develop a steady diet in God’s word. If we ate only one meal a week, we’d die long before we got to our next meal. Similarly, reading or hearing God’s word only on Sunday will leave us weak and struggling in our walk with him.
Just as you eat several meals a day, schedule regular times to meet with God and study the Bible. Don’t worry, every time you crack open your Bible doesn’t have to be like sitting down to a seven-course meal. Start with ten or fifteen minutes a few times a week and build from there.
Eventually, spending time in the word will become like a sweet dessert that you can’t get enough of.
Prayer Point: Ask God to give you a hunger for tasting his word.
