Do Not Tremble - 8.16.19

Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 (NASB)

This verse comes from God’s initial instructions to Joshua. Moses had just died and God officially put Joshua in charge of his chosen people.

It’s interesting that God starts his instructions with “Don’t shiver or worry.” Did God expect that reaction out of Joshua? Yes, he did. God created Joshua, knew him inside and out. God knew what made Joshua happy or sad, angry or scared. He wasn’t surprised when Joshua giggled at something or was too tired to move another inch.

God was prepared for Joshua’s best days and worst days … and he promised to be there for every one of them.

Paul gave his young pastor-in-training similar advice a few thousand years later.

For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NASB)

Paul wrote to Timothy from prison in an effort to encourage him to continue his ministry. Because Timothy was young, some believers didn’t have much respect for him. There were also false teachers telling believers something different than the truth Paul and Timothy had been sharing. Then there were the Jews and Romans who hated Jesus and his followers.

Paul knew all about  uphill battles—he’s wrote from prison!—so he understood that Timothy was likely shivering and worried. But Paul and Timothy’s mighty God was with them.

Joshua’s mighty God was with him.

Your mighty God is with you!

Prayer Point: If you are trembling or dismayed, shaking or fearful, gives your worries over to your mighty God and ask him to face them with you.
